The Chevrolet Beat, along with the Trax and the Groove, debuted as a concept vehicle at the 2007 New York International Auto Show.[1] [2]

The concept derived from the Daewoo Kalos, was built in India[3], designed by GM Daewoo in South Korea — and powered by a 1.2 L turbocharged gasoline engine mated to an automatic transmission. [4]

Having vascillated about production plans for the Beat,[5][6][7] GM presented a version carrying the Chevrolet Spark nameplate at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, said to be a pre-production example.

In early 2007, GM conducted a poll testing the relative popularity of the Beat, Trax and Groove concepts on a Chevrolet website, [8] the Beat receiving nearly 50% of the vote.
